Red, White and Black
To kick-start his Monochrome food series, Michael Maes chose red as his first color and received a surge of ideas from food stylist Cindy Melin and prop stylist Lorrie Jay that were equally graphic and bold.
Beginning with red steamed lobster accompanied by red tomatoes artfully arranged on a red plate, he then shot photos of blackened fish with squid ink pasta and did it again with a blanket of meringue for a sensual snow-white effect. The unusual one-color theme heightened the abstract quality of this personal project and produced images that are both impactful and unique.
