Shooting from a doorless, hovering helicopter may not be for everyone, but for Andy Mahr, people and places from above are just as exciting and inspiring as they are on the ground. So it made absolute sense for Andy to continue his love of aerial photography with a drone certification.

In order to become licensed, Andy passed the FAA Small UAS Part 107, a rigorous exam which included over 50 questions addressing general aviation topics as well as weather systems, aviation maps and aviation laws. Since his first drone in 2013, Andy is now on his 5th drone, always upgrading to the latest technology and capture capabilities.

About 75% of Andy’s clients hire him to shoot drone footage in tandem with stills and other motion assets. It’s been a very cost-effective solution especially for industrial, agricultural, and travel clients where hiring a helicopter would be either cost or logistically prohibitive. There’s also no greater tool for social distancing in Andy’s toolbox than the drone, which proved to be an even greater asset during the pandemic. Andy continually flew his drone during Covid, making new work and sharpening skills!

Whether traveling personally or professionally, Andy packs his drone, always ready for any opportunity to see a location from a bird’s eye view. He’s looking forward to going back to Africa soon in hopes of capturing the animal migrations for a broader perspective on the scope and scale of their natural habitats.
